30 years ago - April 14th, 1994 - Robert Osborne signed @TCM on the air by throwing a big, fake switch in NY. 30 years later, the 5 of us (& this photobombing interloper) are 4 days away from our 15th Film Festival. I’ve also included a photo of me going over my bets on set.

The first film to air that night TCM debuted was GONE WITH THE WIND ('39), Ted Turner's favorite. Here is Robert Osborne's introduction from that night.

The film was followed by SINGIN' IN THE RAIN, IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT, THE PETRIFIED FOREST and CAT PEOPLE.

Before he was a TCM host, @DaveKarger appeared on the network with Robert Osborne in 2007. He presented a night of Best Picture Academy Award winning films.

When TCM was officially launched in Times Square 30 years ago on this day in 1994, Ted Turner and Robert Osborne were joined by Hollywood legends for the big moment. The date was selected to coincide with the centennial anniversary of the first public movie showing in NYC.

One of our first franchises, Preservation Showcase highlighted efforts made to restore your favorite classic films and obscure releases. It was hosted by actor Roddy McDowall, who was also a noted film collector.
