Last week, the Dutch Eerste Kamer (Senate) voted a backbench bill into law with a large majority. The bill, brought by MPs from parties across the political spectrum (D66, Partij van de Arbeid, 50PLUS, VVD and GroenLinks), sought to provide a safety net for Dutch citzs in the UK.

The legislation would do this by allowing Dutch citizens who have been living in the UK since before Brexit to keep hold of their Dutch citizenship if they apply to become British (within a time-limited window).

HOWEVER, the law is still dormant.

The law contains a clause saying it will only be activated if citizens' rights in the UK have not been sufficiently safeguarded.

Currently the official position is that for now, the law should remain dormant.

We however, say that our rights are *not* sufficiently safeguarded, despite the Withdrawal Agreement, and therefore argue that the law should be activated.

We wrote a letter to the Dutch minister of Justice and Security, explaining why the law should be activated, to allow Dutch citizens in the UK to be able to naturalise as British without losing our Dutch and EU citizenship in the process.

The minister is responsible for deciding, on behalf of the government, whether to activate the legislation. You can read our letter here: t3m.org.uk/t3m_stasjenv
