We missed #NationalUnicornDay yesterday, so here's an illustration from Cuvier's De l'histoire naturelle des cetaces (1836) of the 'unicorn of the sea' - the narwhal! Both volumes of this work (text & atlas) can be found in the rare books room in the library MBA - Marine Biological Association 🦄🐋
It's #internationaldayoftheseal - here are some lovely illustrations of grey and harbour seals from volume 1 of 'The Mammals of Great Britain and Ireland' by J.G Millais, 1904. Only 1025 copies of this volume were printed - we have no77 here MBA - Marine Biological Association 🦭
#OTD in 1788 and 1907 respectively Mary Roberts and JZ Young were born. Both accomplished writers on their specialist subjects, we have some of their published works in the library MBA - Marine Biological Association. You can search our print collection at mba.ac.uk/our-facilities… to discover more
We've just found out it's #SaveASpiderDay so we've popped up to the rare books room MBA - Marine Biological Association and found this lovely illustration of a ~sea spider~ from volume 3 of the Challenger Expedition reports. A bit of a cheat but we think they also need some love 🕷️
It may look a little different now, but did you know there's been a physical library MBA - Marine Biological Association since the opening of the Citadel Hill laboratory in 1888.

Rissoides desmaresti, a species of mantis shrimp is rarely found, and only on our south and west coasts but #Brixham based fisherman Luke Tanner has kindly shared this video with us! Share sightings via #DASSH or by using the iNaturalist app NBN Trust #INaturalistUK #MarineLife
#OTD in 1834 Ernst Haeckel was born. We were going to post something not 'jelly' related but then we saw this illustration of Porpita porpita from the volume on siphonophores of the Challenger Expedition reports, which can be found in our rare books room MBA - Marine Biological Association 🪼
It's #valentinesday and whilst we love marine biology, we went for something a little different. In our rare books room MBA - Marine Biological Association we have a copy of 'The Love Letters of Ernst Haeckel written between 1898 and 1903' to Franziska von Altenhausen. Something to add to the tbr pile 📖
Today is Darwin Day as #OTD in 1809 Charles Darwin was born. We have a number of his published works here MBA - Marine Biological Association, including several editions of the Origin of Species. All great additions to our collection, but our first edition copy is a favourite it's fair to say
#february11 is International Day of Women and Girls in Science. Here we have just a very small selection of the books in our collection, written by or about women in marine science. There are plenty more on the shelves in our reading room MBA - Marine Biological Association to enjoy reading too
