Our 4 year old told us tonight that he doesn’t want to ever move out. We told him that he always has a home with us ❤️. He didn’t understand what we meant, but it was a precious little moment where we felt the past, present, & future all at once. 🥹

I see too many university students destroying their health while chasing a GPA. I wish students knew how little marks they received in school mattered in the big picture. I try to tell them that their health takes priority. But many still base their sense of self on marks. 😞

Today I thought about how we will have to talk to our child soon about stranger danger & consent. Randoms interact with him when we’re out & it reminded me of how precious this childlike innocence really is. He has no idea about the world & yet we must prepare him for it 🥺

At the park and thinking I might need to make my next study the “Social Structure of the Playground.” Each little play world is a micro - universe of its own with its own culture 🧐

I used to teach special ed before my grad school and would always feel like kids had these superpowers that weren’t being celebrated and encouraged by the larger ed system. It’s tragic that our society isn’t organized to nourish these kids. How much talent is wasted this way?

Our child is 4.5 and tests boundaries. But then there are so many sweet and fleeting moments. For example, tonight he kept touching my face stubble and giggling because it was tickling his face. Parenting is this constant duality of being tired but filled to the brim with love ❤️

Took my son to lunch & at the table next to us was a dad eating/scrolling on his phone while his son played a video game on a tablet. They talked infrequently. I don’t know the context/ family history, but that made me feel depressed and was a reminder to put the phone away more

The walk in clinic at 10am on Saturday could be somebody’s ethnography fieldsite. Anti maskers yelling at masked patients and talking about 5G radiation / lizard people; people trying to get opioids & adderall refills (who get turned away). This is too much before my coffee 🫠

Wait a minute...Since when did SOC journals require you to pay to submit articles for review? I have heard about this in other fields, but what in the pay to play??

I'm ambivalent about AI in higher ed, but one area where I see need is in creating bibliographies. Is there a more tedious task while writing a paper? I wish AI could read my half-baked paper and spit out a perfectly formatted bibliography. Maybe this already exists?

Was listening to a BJJ Mental Models podcast about ecological training, which is a new craze in BJJ. I see the merits but can also see why it might not appeal to hobbyists & newer white belts. I’m just happy that we’re having discussions about pedagogy. BJJ is behind other sports.

Our kid is 4.5 and we've now reached a sweet spot where our conversations are more in-depth, where he has learned to regulate emotions better, and where he still loves being around us. The toddler phase has been rocky at times, but this new phase is just lovely. 😊

It’s a small W, but our child devoured my cooking tonight and said it was better than our go-to family restaurant. I can confirm that it is objectively NOT better, but it’s the thought that counts 😌
