This derelict jetty in East Greenwich has been reanimated by a lush carpet of mosses and stonecrops thanks to Groundwork London 🌿 A great example of what can be done on the Thames with a little knowledge & imagination 🌿

Today I led a lovely group of American students around Rotherhithe, exploring topics as diverse as sewers, stench pipes, ship breaking, defenestration, slag heaps, mudlarks & (of course) the Pilgrim Fathers. The highlight though was the appearance of a heron in Russia Dock Woods

I was sad to see the ‘Maybe it’s because I’m a Londoner’ mural on Bolina Road, South Bermondsey has been painted over.

The photo of me is from 2021 (by Akiko DuPont), the other one taken today.

Lubetkin’s Modernist classic, the penguin pool at London Zoo (1934), looking very Hockneyesque in today’s glorious spring sunshine 🌞 🐧

Etymology of the day is ‘bumf’: a shortening of ‘bumfodder’, 19th-century slang for toilet paper. It was later applied to any throwaway material or paperwork.
