I missed this over the holidays - some good points in here. Personally, I don't think WhatsApp is going to disappear from government - but ensuring it's on government phones, and that key messages are properly kept, is essential

Coming back from leave and catching up on all the fantastic work my colleagues have been doing - fascinating analysis from Finn here on how the government's majority in parliament has changed, and how that compares to recent parliaments

Great Institute for Gov comment piece by Nicholas Timmins on disorderly end of PFI contracts. Hundreds of schools + hospitals are coming back into public ownership but disputes about their condition could lead to service disruption. Govt needs to get a grip instituteforgovernment.org.uk/comment/pfi-as…

As Starmer sets out his stall for the year to come, Institute for Gov colleagues have got lots of advice for how he and his team can make the most of the time between now and the election - take a read below

Great piece from Institute for Gov colleagues celebrating a success in government, equal marriage❤️🏳️‍🌈!

Fascinating lessons on policy change - and a reminder of the gratitude we (/I) owe so many people who paved the way for things we now take for granted

A brilliant piece on the success of same sex marriage policy from Sophie Metcalfe Tom Sasse. It was a personal highlight for me to chair the Institute for Gov policy reunion on this earlier in the year; my wife and I got married shortly after the legislation came into force.

Even 10 years on nothing quite beats the feeling I felt stood outside Parliament when equal marriage passed third reading. This is a great piece - as well as a neat case study in legislating there’s some invaluable learning for campaigners on how you bring about social change.

There aren't many policies which just increase the sum of human happiness with so few downsides... and a great example of what happens when governments lead rather than follow public opinion.

We have so much interesting data about government ministers - can you help us make it public?

Get in touch with Philip if so

Do I know anyone with experience of setting up public access to a SQL database?

We (IfG) hold a database of ministerial appointments since 1979 which we’re keen to make externally accessible – would love to speak/get coffee if you’ve done something similar

An uplifting Institute for Gov report to end 2023

How David Cameron Nick Clegg Lynne Featherstone Maria_Miller & countless civil servants ensured same sex marriage was a great government successes story of the 2010s

In the last week before Christmas, the government gave us an early present - more transparency!

As I argued for Institute for Gov, and as UK Open Gov Network have said too - some good steps here, but there's more the government can do:

'Rishi Sunak and his government should remember that transparency is for life, not just for Christmas.'

While the year ended with some welcome steps forward on transparency in government, Tim Durrant says keeping up momentum in 2024 is key instituteforgovernment.org.uk/comment/good-n…

As Westminster winds down for the year, some good news - the government is finally taking (some) (small) steps to improve transparency
