Black women’s participation in clinical trials *will* save lives. Every treatment available for breast cancer is based on past clinical trials, but Black women have historically been underrepresented. We must increase our representation for improved outcomes.

This week, we want to remind everyone about the long term good that participating in clinical trials offers Black women in the present and in the future. Clinical trials can offer newly emerging treatments for breast cancer, and the data can help the next generation.

Today is National Women's Checkup Day, a reminder to take care of ourselves and our health by scheduling appointments with our healthcare providers. We want to use this day to remind our Blessties that we have resources for any questions that might come up.

Moms are the best. They’re the backbone of our movement and they deserve the best medical care, especially when it comes to breast cancer. Not only does participation in clinical trials help future generations of Black women, it can also mean better care in real time.

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force just updated their screening guidelines to recommend screening start at 40 years old, but that guideline does not apply to higher risk individuals (like Black women!).

Your experience as a patient matters. We know that in the process of cancer treatment it doesn’t always feel like you’re in control. But you have the right to understand your treatment and to ask questions of your medical team.

Most Black women, especially at younger ages, have dense breasts. Dense breast tissue cannot be felt—only a radiologist looking at a mammogram can tell if a woman has dense breasts, and 3D mammograms are best for finding early signs of breast cancer in women with dense breasts.

We’ll never diminish how difficult it is to receive news of a breast cancer diagnosis. We’ve been there, and that’s why we know that minimizing stress as much as possible is crucial. Here are a few ways to manage stress levels:

Virtually every treatment we have today for cancer (and other diseases) was first tested in clinical trials — which is why it's so important for people to participate, not only for themselves but for future generations of Black women.

A treatment that works for a white patient with Triple Negative Breast Cancer may not work the same for us. In order to test how drugs work on Black bodies and keep Black women from dying at higher rates, we need more Black women in clinical trials.

Financial resources are out there for those who need help, including non-medical related expenses connected to treatment, such as transportation assistance, food, utilities, and housing expenses.

We know that Black women are 41% more likely to die of breast cancer than white women, with Black breast cancer patients experiencing the lowest 5-year survival rate of any race or ethnicity. Overall 5-year relative survival rates are 81% for Black women vs 91% for white women.
