Formed an unlikely bond with Alf walking the corridors of RTE late at night all those years ago. Not only was he an incredible broadcaster, he was a kind, gent of a man. Thoughts are with his family ❤️

My first play on RTÉ Radio 1 , and the first play for many many acts, was by Alf McCarthy. He was playing Hozier (Take Me To Church) months before it took off too (when the BBC backed it big time) and before all the stations here backed it.

Very sad news this morning of the passing of Alf McCarthy. Alf was a brilliant DJ who had an amazing rapport with his Late Date audience. He also gave lots of Irish acts their first radio plays.
Alf was most certainly one of the good guys. He will be missed.
