For fans of unlikely comparisons, here I compare the last days of the emperor Vespasian and the late Queen ('an emperor should die on his feet' said the dutiful Vespasian). shorturl.at/rzHMY

In preparation for a discussion of history on TV, I have a few thoughts about what my aims are. shorturl.at/cmD49 From drama recon to searching for the upper floors of Roman houses (they didn't live in bungalows!)

What does the face of power look like?
Who gets commemorated in art and why?
And how do we react to the statues of politicians whom we deplore?
What did Roman Emperors really do?

I love my publishers. They've just send me a clutch of Roman emperors as a souvenir of my emperor book shorturl.at/jlxJ4 (It's a thunderbolt in his hand btw!)

Interesting stuff on the 'end of Roman Britain' on BBC Radio 4 Today (from Digging for Britain series). It's a question debated since at least 1970s. One argument then was that town of Wroxeter was urban centre into 6th or 7th centuries (though that has recently been challenged).

Here's a few more expansive thoughts about why good democracy NEEDS good drama, good fiction and good story telling (not just as an optional extra): shorturl.at/cdvyE From Dickens to Greek tragedy in apartheid South Africa, and now Mr Bates vs the Post Office.
