Hands on study of fossilization using gummies to represent ancient bodies, layers of bread to represent layers of sediment & heavy books to represent pressure and time. After a few patient days of waiting, absolutely epic reveal day full of student observations & questions. Best.

For Indigenous Education looked like experiencing sacred medicines from and talking about our connection to the land, then planting medicines of our own to care for then give back to the land once they break seed and grow. Best little hands on land based learning.

We’ve started a big school-wide Indigenous Education project; an act of reconciliation where students of all ages are learning & visually cataloging Ojibwe words & phrases which we’re going to turn into a legit language resource book for our school library. Zaagi’.

One of the Indigenous students who I was lucky to connect with through Indigenous Education, went home after a chat on ribbon skirts, talked to her auntie about how we’d talked ribbon skirts at school & her auntie was inspired to make her a ribbon skirt. So this work matters.

A4: I think the truest essence of this is that embracing our ability as human beings to always try new things (thoughts, experiences, food) is the ultimate freedom. It makes the entire world a buffet of just possible anythjngs.

A3 - I love this idea. I am lucky enough to teach middle schoolers as a home room and we use the language of “you’re building your own frame” - if you see a thing as good, bad, hard, worthwhile, beautiful, awful, then it becomes that through your lens. That’s powerful.

A2 - We study this quote when we study Langston Hughes in class; seeing how a dream deferred, how letting any dream wither for lack of action, wastes that dream. Dreams are great, but when you wake up, you have to choose action over fear, or you might as well hit snooze.

A1 - hey ! This quote makes me feel like the attitude I try to build in my classroom; this idea that seeing the capacity in yourself to achieve is the step before the first step. I try to help all my learners feel like their capacity & their belief are symbiotic.

It was ROUND 2 🔔 of our March Poetry Madness, and again, we had a playful conversation about youthful innocence and creative imagination.

“Indiana Jones” was relatable and reminded students of the power of nostalgia and imagination to spark action.

Today looked like Oreo phases, comparing our geographical experience to other global spots, learning about important Indigenous connections to the eclipse, then creating safe outdoor viewing and photography ops! Gotta max out on fun we can’t have again until 2044!

We as Anishinabe people recognize that we are also a part of a Universal Family. We place great reverence upon our relationship with Grandmother Moon and Grandfather Sun. The Anishinaabemowin word for Solar Eclipse is “Aazowekidaadok Giizook” (sun and moon meet)🌙☀️

Some amazing history regarding the connection between the solar eclipse and the Haudenosaunee in this vid!

It’s believed that this eclipse will amplify the message of peace under which the Haudenosaunee Confederacy was created. 🪶🫶🏽

(Gotta love a positive prophecy!)

This year our class Phosphorescent Tardigrade winner (our amazing annual March Mammal Madness award) won the tournament by calling the Great White & winning by 2 points! But really, we all won because “if you’re learning, you’re winning!” & my class absolutely did! Epic!
