It was Belfast's very own Thomas McCabe who would prevent the slave trade getting a commercial foothold in Ireland.

This enlightened Presbyterian radical and republican thinker espoused the ideals of and for all.

My article in today’s The Irish News on why no historian should have anything to do with the British government’s “independent public history” project, a charade that is intrinsically linked to the reviled British Legacy Act. irishnews.com/opinion/no-his…

You wonder how many govt-sponsored history processes Irish academics can be involved in and some still cannot connect the dots between the process and structures of state control. All history, especially history of the recent past, is political and esp when govt commissioned.

Let’s have a monument to Henry Joy in High Street where he was born & later executed in 1798. Rename High Street McCracken Street after Mary Ann & her brother Henry Joy. They’ve been written out of our civic spaces & history.

Had a fantastic time in beautiful Bellaghy, Derry with Danny Morrison et al at the Scullion residence where Roddy McCorley hid out on the run in #1798.
An incredible story told to Bobby Sands by Colm Scullion whilst in Long Kesh sharing a cell. Now poetry on wall outside the house.

Was wondering about this as I passed just the other day.

Opening closed paths up, freeing movement and improving connectivity - all good things for cities.

⚫️ The historical significant 'Sugarhouse Entry' still remains closed after a substantial amount of taxpayers money was spent resurfacing and updating it last year for pedestrian use. The works are complete.
So, what's the delay for our 'right of way'?

🔳Should the citizens of Belfast be paying homage to genocidal mass murderers in this day and age?

With such onerous names like Cromwell Road to Chichester Street, Why do we honour those who caused so much division, death and destruction on a massive scale across this

Despite the long list of places named for Chichester, there are no streets in Belfast named after Ireland's first democrats: the Republicans who, in that city, blocked slave shipping (Thomas McCabe), sought equality for women (Thomas Russell), opposed sectarian laws (Wolfe Tone).

◾️The Shaftesbury family ended up owning the bed & banks of Lough Neagh in the 1600's, after doing a deal with Ulster's very own murder machine Sir Arthur Chichester. The Shaftesburys have been shafting & extracting the wealth of the lough ever since.

To begin with, Chichester

Sign the petition! Local Goverment: Rename Chichester Street in Belfast to McCracken Street.
The McCracken's were one the most respected Presbyterian families in Belfast.
Two well known members of the family are Henry Joy McCracken & his sister Mary Ann.

Lord Chancellor Fitzgibbon, later Earl of Clare, led a visitation to Trinity College Dublin, 19-21 April, 1798, to question fellows & students about their politics.

Nineteen students were expelled as he suspected them to be United Irishmen.
