For example, disposable caps have not been shown to reduce the risk of healthcare related infections when compared to reusable versions and are noted to promote more microbial shed. Therefore, policies should be revised to encourage the use of cloth caps over disposable ones.

Instead, policies on when and what products should be used should be carefully and routinely reviewed to ensure that recommendations and requirements for use align with high-quality evidence (or expert advice when evidence is not readily available).

C. Most PPE and sterile barriers, such as drapes, are primarily made of plastic with the associated downstream negative environmental and health benefits. However, these items are designed to reduce immediate harm and cannot simply be eliminated from healthcare.
