Richard Yeomans Paired with Zeke Crofton-MacDonald’s forum on Wolastoqey interpretations on treaties in the state of Maine and Wabanaki resistance to settler state making, written in Wolastoqey, we have a historical perspective on the colonial negotiations that dispossessed Wabanaki people
Richard Yeomans “… through continued Wolastoqiyik dispossession and exploitation of unceded lands and waters.” The importance of this work shows that postsecondary education in settler colonies that became states was a vehicle that drove colonization. It shows how we got to where we are today.
Richard Yeomans Richard Yeomans continues “These entanglements shaped not only the development of higher education in the province, but also the politics of the colonial government and ownership of Wolastoqey territory by settlers – a foundation that has further reinforced itself over the generations”
Richard Yeomans Acadiensis This issue also has important review essays by Jay Lalonde Mark McLaughlin, PhD Beth Jewett Michael Boudreau and Mathias Iroro Orhero. It is a wonderful issue and one that I am proud to co-edit alongside Peter L. Twohig. I hope you all check it out!
Richard Yeomans Just posting these image of an article in Acadiensis written in Wolastoqey, one of the Indigenous languages of the Wabanaki confederacy and part of the region our journal serves, feels so significant to me. It shows what is possible in publishing when we do slow and careful work
The new issue of Acadiensis makes me especially proud as co-editor. Not only do we have fabulous work by Richard Yeomans on the settler-colonial History of UNB, but we also have our first Wolastoqey language article by Zeke Crofton-MacDonald! This is critical in academic publishing
