Does democracy prevent language endangerment?

This graph shows the relationship between how democratic a country is (based on Freedom House ratings) & the number of endangered languages it has (from ELCat).

More democratic countries do not have fewer endangered languages.

So sorry to say that Professor Bernard Dov Spolsky passed away on Shabbat, כ״ג אב, August 20. Impossible to express how many groups and individuals, research areas and practical tasks, owe a permanent debt to this great man.
