My new report out today – the first in a two-year research programme into precarious work here at Resolution Foundation, supported by Unbound Philanthropy – looks at employers’ use of variable-hours and temporary contracts. A thread on some key findings 🧵 … resolutionfoundation.org/publications/f…

Very excited to be part of this important new project exploring the devolution of social security in depth (and to be working with such a great team!). This work is much-needed to understand the complexity of social security + how people actually experience it across the country

One observation from today's announcement: a misplaced focus on benefit claims among people with anxiety & depression.

Most PIP claims among young people do relate to 'psychiatric disorders' - but these tend to be ADHD & autism rather than anxiety & depression.

Here's the full thread from me and Simon Pittaway: March's level of CPI inflation was 3.2%, slightly higher than expectations at 3.1%.

Another month, another record broken...

There are now 2.83m working-age adults out of work due to long-term sickness.

Economic inactivity due to long-term sickness has been rising for over 4.5 years, the joint-longest sustained rise on record.

Whoever wins the next election will be running a benefits system dominated by Universal Credit. They should know what they think about it - reading the new note from Alex Clegg is a good place to start resolutionfoundation.org/publications/i…

Great to talk Universal Credit at Resolution Foundation today. 3 reflections that I have at this stage of reform: 1 - UC isn't a single reform. It pulls together major reforms like ESA and Local Housing Allowance that were new - we still don't know much about outcomes from all of this

Who is eligible for means-tested benefits?

Policy post-2010 has zig-zagged between phases of:
1) 'it's terrible that these middle & upper-middle income households get benefits'
&
2) 'it's terrible families face such high marginal effective tax rates'
