Natural resources can be a blessing but also a source of #conflict in communities. In Maruthankernykulam, Batticaloa, UNDP in Sri Lanka works with Chrysalis to bring 💦 & infra solutions to enhance social cohesion between two communities. Supported by #FundingWindows . #SDG16

And in between meetings, I managed to stop at shops where hand-loomed #saree made by women on the nearby communities are sold. Absolutely beautiful ⭐️ It’s a joy to wear made in 🇱🇰 products!

Thanks for a very comprehensive presentation on the socio-economic status of the #Batticaloa district and challenges, including school drop out and water/floods. Batti has a high percentage of women-headed households & the recent economic hardships have affected them hard.

One thing that stuck with me from my visit to the East is the enthusiasm, vibrancy & commitment of #women entrepreneurs. But they continue to face systemic challenges - getting required certification, access to reliable finance to scale up & stigma. Hat off to their perseverance!

Enjoyed exchanges with the Shadow Youth Council members, and then with entrepreneurs of SPM. We must connect partners 2 create opportunities 4 youth. We must connect youth job seekers with potential employers. Innovators with investors! 🙏 4 engaging dialogue & inspiring visit!

We had fruitful exchanges with GA Ampara, and then with the Kathankudy Urban Council on district profiles of #MVI Multidimensional Vulnerability Index. Discussed implications of the economic crisis on communities and how to target local gov planning & budgeting based on data.

Over 300 visited the #gender transformation exhibition in #Batticaloa yesterday. Deeply engaged in profound conversations/reflections. UNDP in Sri Lanka reaffirms commitment to ending #SGBV & promoting #gender equality in 🇱🇰. 🙏 2 Canada in Sri Lanka and Maldives & Norway MFA 4 supporting the journey.
