Friends. The Chandra Source Catalog version 2.1 has been released! This is a very rich and exciting dataset for astronomical discovery, and for data-driven exploration, regardless of whether you are an X-ray astronomer or not. Enjoy it! cxc.cfa.harvard.edu/csc/

In the year 1181 a rare supernova explosion appeared in the night sky, staying visible for 185 consecutive days. This new image allows us to marvel at the same object that appeared for our ancestors more than 800 years ago. More: s.si.edu/snr1181

Have to say I profoundly disagree. Communication with non-specialists is such an important part of our jobs (and a part I am passionate about) and we frequently navigate politics proposing for funding and working in/managing large, international teams with competing interests.

Comparing the '24 and '25 NASA requests for Chandra is depressing and remarkable. Since the '24 request, the Chandra team has RETURNED the HRC to science, restored 8 years of youth to the Aspect camera, and force-multiplied JWST to yield awesome results.

These cuts quickly lead to decommissioning Chandra Observatory, the world's only sub-arcsec resolution X-ray telescope, with no future replacement in sight.

NGC 3576 is a region of glowing gas located about 9,000 light-years from Earth. Intense radiation & winds from massive stars are shredding the clouds from which the stars formed, generating many of the fascinating shapes seen within. This image is roughly 50 light-years across.

Chandra team currently all working on Sunday night to replan our command loads within 4 hours to point to a very fast Target of Opportunity discovered by the community. Incredible team. And Chandra is critically needed in our new golden age of Time Domain Astronomy.
