We've just travelled from Vogelwarte_Science in Switzerland to Fundación Migres in Tarifa, S Spain to put up our insect radar to monitor the insects migrating between Africa and Europe! Birgen Haest
I'm currently 2500m up in Sierra Nevada, Spain. The snow is covered in insects! Incl lots of Bactrocera oleae flies, Chironomidae, aphids, bark lice, Calliphora etc.
There are no larval habitats up here which suggests they are migrating!

Quite excited to present at the #EOUFledglings2024 this afternoon the work done with Birgen Haest, Baptiste Schmid & Nadja Weisshaupt about integrating radar data and #bioacoustics to quantify #migration . I promise(hope) it will not be boring...
Out today! Two papers on #migratory #insect s as part of The Royal Society PhilTrans issue about #insect monitoring methods (royalsocietypublishing.org/toc/rstb/curre…)
Monitoring insect #biodiversity using #radar : doi.org/10.1098/rstb.2…
Diel timing of insect migration: doi.org/10.1098/rstb.2…
Our new paper is out!!
Led by Birgen Haest, radars across Europe were used to monitor high flying insect activity.
Amongst other findings, we found the largest proportion (25–75%) of migratory insect movements occurred during the day! (Instead of night or crepuscular).
Had a great visit Vogelwarte_Science!🇨🇭 A chance for a talk on our bat migration research SFB 1372 & w/ Oskars Keišs 🇺🇦. Thanks to Barbara Helm Barbara Helm & Bangor Animal Navigation Group for the invite. I enjoyed the open minded atmosphere and exchange of thoughts Birgen Haest Baptiste Schmid Martins Briedis
#BOU2023 #SESH1 1/6 Hi, I`m Nathalie, from the Institute of Avian Research "Vogelwarte Helgoland", presenting work done with a.o. Birgen Haest on the repeatability of, and environmental effects on, the migratory phenology of Common Tern Project, long-distance migratory seabirds.
Fun podcast on all things migratory insects by my MoveInEurope (vogelwarte.ch/en/projects/mo…) colleague, Vogelwarte_Science's PostDoc, Dr Will Leo Hawkes.
Time for the first talks under Grand Challenges theme: Insect #Migration & #Conservation with speakers:
