Devon Book Club The police favour a 'vagrant' theory, but there's evidence to suggest otherwise and two women from the hospital decide to investigate. Our, very different, sleuths must deal with their own problems as well as track down a man seen with the nurse at midnight The Midnight Man. 3/3
Devon Book Club But not at the South London. It's the coldest Winter then on record and times are grim (though the building blocks for a new society are being put in place). Then a nurse goes missing. Her body is found days later, behind a locked door. 2/3
Devon Book Club 'The Midnight Man' is set in south London in 1946 in and around the South London Hospital for Women (a real hospital, now closed, run by and for women). The war is over, the euphoria has dissipated, the men are home and the women are having to return to the kitchen. 1/2
There’s a brand new little library on Bampfylfe Lane in the city centre - can you help Princesshay fill it up? 📚
Devon Book Club A huge loss indeed - a man of principle - did a lot of legal aid work as a solicitor. A champion of justice which also comes through in his Tudor era set novels.
Devon Book Club Jennifer Bew Orr ✏️📚📷 Elif Shafak Hi there! The session is here: youtu.be/T4fK3CvkIkU
Thank you. Elif Shafak is such a fascinating and inspiring thinker. I love the idea of valuing diversity as a principle, as a value and as something to be treasured. From there we derive so much humanity and in that way we can maybe combat tribalism.
As ever, everyone, many thanks for yoru friendship and company. It's always a great way to get the week going. Have a great couple of weeks and keep sharing your book news and views #devonbookhour
AS we come to the end of our hour a reminder that we'll have a gap next week as it's another b/h but we'll be back in a fortnight and do keep the chat coming #devonbookhour
Devon Book Club just a l’il reminder that my new book, Murder at the Pirate Festival is released this Thursday! It’s a swashbuckling cosy murder with Devonshire pirate festival vibes. #devonbookhour
Devon Book Club Jessie Greengrass wrote the wonderful novel, Sight, a maternal odyssey so beautifully written. Jenn Ashworth wrote a few but my fave is Cold Light, a teen tragedy with dark humour and twisted secrets. #devonbookhour
Devon Book Club Jodie homer I guess this also might apply to your earlier point about what writing disturbing scenes/stories might do to writers. What one writer might feel emotionally safe writing, another might not and vice versa. And, yes, timing as well. #devonbookhour
Devon Book Club I bought his books a few years ago & haven't actually read them yet - always lots to read - but I've taken a peak several times & there's something so grounding about the story, gaining perspective remembering the simple joys in life, and creatures, big and small. #devonbookhour
Yes indeed. It was a Zoom party joined by people from all over the world - a very wise and much loved man who has worked in social change over 5 decades and is still contributing. He remarked today on how we should record and think about the change we contribute to. #devonbookhour
Angela Hobbs Devon Book Club Just as catching sight of the man and his animals were in life, I think, Angela. A well known local traveller with well-loved horse & dog, and beautifully painted caravan. I remember him from when I first moved to Devon, and thought what an extraordinary life. #devonbookhour
