Glad to join Burnt Mills ES admin, staff, parents & Action in Montgomery to discuss student/community needs. BMES serves families from the Enclave apts so it was great to brainstorm ways to bridge my office’s work there w/ school-based initiatives. The more we collab, the more we can do!

Ramadan Mubarak! I am so appreciative of being welcomed to break the fast with community members.

For all those who are observing this month, may your fasting be easy, and may it bring an abundance of peace and blessings to you and yours.

Thank you Governor Wes Moore and team for visiting some key MoCo sites like the Crisis Center!

Great to chat with Maryland DJS Sec. Schiraldi about how to connect more MoCo youth to proven services & accountability measures, so we don’t have them picked up 5 times for the same crime.

3/ We need these bills to pass in the MD General Assembly this year, to get some meaningful protections in place for renters:

🔸 Just Cause Eviction
🔸 Tenant Safety Act
🔸 Renters Rights & Housing Stabilization Act (part of Gov. Moore’s housing package)

This truly cannot wait.

2/ The inability to hold landlords accountable for egregious conditions — the power imbalance between tenants and our worst slumlords — is maddening. We have newly arrived immigrants, some with limited English, seeking basic safety, and a landlord responding by hiring a lobbyist.

Update: The day after this rally at the Enclave, a family reported coming home to a flooded apt, broken sprinkler, flooding down multiple floors. Mgmt claims residents caused it while cooking. County Fire Rescue said there’s no evidence of that.

Multiple elevators are out again.

This is totally unacceptable

Sometimes housing issues can be oversimplified and made falsely binary, but that isn’t the case here. This property is notorious for a reason, its residents deserve better

Hats off to Councilmember Kristin Mink, Enclave Tenant Association, and everyone else pushing here.

3/🔸I’m working w/ County Exec Marc Elrich on new County tools to hold slumlords accountable.

🔸State Del. Jheanelle Wilkins’s Just Cause Eviction bill just passed Committee!

🔸Governor Wes Moore’s Housing Package has new tools for tenants rights & increased housing!

We need these bills to pass!

2/ The conditions at the Enclave are unacceptable: mold, pests, leaks, broken elevators, unsecured doors, gas outages!

Thousands of citations, a disproportionate amount of County code enforcement time, and a previous rally by the Tenants’ Union months ago haven’t changed things.
