In this photo, a soldier sights a Colt machine-gun on a firing range. This gun could fire 400 to 500 bullets a minute, but was prone to jamming. Canadians went to war with the Colt but had been issued the more reliable Vickers gun by the summer of 1916.

One hundred years ago, on April 1st, 1924, Canada created its own national air force. King George V gave royal assent and the RCAF adopted a design for its first symbol of wings. They featured one significant difference: the integration of the letter “C” for “Canadian.”

Artillery dominated the First World War battlefield and inflicted the majority of casualties. In this photo, gunners write, 'iron rations' and 'a present from Canada,' on artillery shells before firing them. The word 'rations,' is used here with grim irony.

This letter opener is an excellent example of trench art created by soldiers during the First World War. Skilled soldiers used their downtime at the front and behind the lines to create art from the remnants of the war.

The diving support ship HMCS Cormorant was the first Canadian naval vessel to have a mixed crew of men and women. As a diving support ship, Cormorant had facilities to support divers, and carried small, deep-diving submersibles.
