Our paper taking a critical look at *number adaptation* has been accepted at Cognition!

But that's not all: Cognition has also agreed to publish a short back and forth with folks who disagree with us, so stay tuned for that in the near future!

Jessica Cantlon Thanks Jessica Cantlon. Wonderfully insightful read. “What I do best, chart new directions and follow through, would just not be possible anymore at CMU.” 👏👏👏 Lenore Blum.

'I am talking about sexism in the workplace. Subtle biases and micro-aggressions pile up, few of which on their own rise to the level of “let’s take action,” but are insidious nonetheless. Speak up and you’re labeled “difficult.”' -- Lenore Blum

My biggest beef with IQ is how much of human cognitive ability it almost completely fails to capture: political cunning, memorization, artistic skill, musical ability and even creative genius. You could literally be world class at any these and still have a pretty average IQ.

The inevitable backlash from those seeking to protect and enable ill-gotten and abused power is all the more reason why we cannot stop fighting for change.

Here is the free copy of the article 'Uniquely Human Intelligence arose from Expanded Information Capacity', Nature Reviews Psychology (I think the open Nature link was not working steven t. piantadosi):

Really enjoyed this article on uniquely human cognition -> thank you to Jessica Cantlon & Piantadosi for articulating so eloquently an idea that makes a tonne of sense to me: there are no domain-specific silver bullets when it comes to human cognition. nature.com/articles/s4415…

Seems they process numerosity separated from continuous magnitudes, at least some of the time - like monkeys and numerous (pun intended) other species. Kudos to the authors for never claiming this was counting, despite the review title. Curious what Jessica Cantlon thinks.

I wanted to highlight one piece of this paper that is especially relevant to language research. A lot of work has sought to understand whether nonhuman primates can learn hierarchical grammars / context free languages.

But did you know...
