President Biden keeps declaring student loan cancellations, and it's often unclear what programs & laws they're based on.

CEF's Andrew Gillen offers a helpful guide to the array of programs, including their legal and policy problems.

Only repaying principal on a student loan could be a big loss for taxpayers due to inflation.

Using the BLS inflation calculator, $20,000 in 2004 equals roughly $33,000 today.

Only paying $20,000 is a real loss of $13,000 for taxpayers.

Bottom line:

'Mr. Biden’s new loan forgiveness is still illegal. The High Court stressed that student loan forgiveness is a major question that requires clear authorization from Congress.'

Nebraska families need more freedom and power.

Vouchers are one way to do that, but as I wrote recently, tax credits are the best way to maximize freedom for everyone: families AND funders.

Sorry, Constitution:

'Given that a student loan cancellation bill doesn’t have enough support in Congress, Biden has moved on the issue unilaterally in a bid to keep a 2020 campaign promise and to try to win over younger voters during an election year.'

You don't have to like PPP loans to be honest about them:

They were created by Congress to be forgiven as the economy was locked down at the outset of COVID.

Biden's student debt cancellation is unilateral executive action to cancel loans that were supposed to be repaid.

This NAIA news serves as a reminder:

There is choice in college sports.

Schools don't have to join the NCAA.

It's another reason the feds should not try to 'fix' college athletics.

FIRE The Philadelphia Inquirer He's right on hypocrisy, and it would be great if public school librarians stocked a balance of views.

My research, and that by some others, suggests they don't.

Not acquiring a book for its views seems as much censorship as removing one.

Almost all of these are Direct Loans from the federal government, not banks.

Even for old FFEL loans, lenders were almost entirely guaranteed repayment by taxpayers if borrowers didn't repay.

So it's regular taxpayers who don't get repaid, not banks.

But do public school librarians put together biased collections to begin with?

Will the media dig into that question?

If dissatisfaction with the ed system broadly is fueling school choice, but the large majority of families are happy with their public schools, it's a win-win.

The unhappy can leave, most $ will stay with pub schools:

About half of Americans say public K-12 education is going…
