As Maggie Munn, Gunggari person and Change the Record National Director said – advocates, families and communities have waited years & years for governments to act on the advice from experts across legal, medical & psychological fields to #raisetheage to at least 14.
Today Australia’s Attorneys-Generals will announce their plans for the minimum age of criminal responsibility. Children belong in schools & playgrounds, not prison. We support First Nations communities, medical & legal experts who are all calling to #RaiseTheAge to at least 14

Kids do not belong in jail. Locking up kids as young as 10 doesn't work - it perpetuates harm and ignores the root causes of behaviour. It's time for governments to listen and act & #RaiseTheAge of criminal responsibility to at least 14 without delay

Multidisciplinary assessment of young people 10-17 in juvenile detention in WA found 89% had at least one domain of severe neurological impairment. Irrespective, no 10 year old has a fully developed brain. Empathy, understanding, support/treatment is necessary. #RaiseTheAge

Pushing kids into the quicksand of the criminal justice system doesn't make sense. On any level.
And while Victoria has hinted at plans to #RaiseTheAge to 14 by 2027, we're not there yet.
