Today, we celebrate International Marconi Day, honouring the radio pioneer's legacy. Did you know the first UK public broadcast occurred at Marconi Works on New Street, now Benefit Cosmetics UK HQ?
#OnThisDay in 1955, J.A. Baker wrote in his diary about a group of woodpeckers he spotted in Edney Wood.
'Woodpeckers, all of them, have such a clownish look - Shakespearean clownishness, elfin and elusive.'
'The hardest thing of all to see is what is really there.' JAB's words are true of his diaries, notes, poetry and drafts. Go and see the real thing at Chelmsford Museum Restless Brilliance exhibition.
May 15th, 7pm we'll hear the story of The Little Car Company & their latest model the Bentley Motors Blower Junior! Join us for this inspirational talk - It's FREE & GREAT FUN, tea and cookies too.

'At work, at about quarter-to-eleven, feeling miserable, I went outside the office. The sky was cloudless; the sun glorious, with a strong W. breeze.'

Correspondence between Baker and S Wales birdwatcher Ron Berry in Restless Brilliance exhibition Chelmsford Museum are a revelation. Eg JAB writes to him in 1977 that 'Every word in The Peregrine is true.' and 'Non-fiction it is'. Letters were found at Swansea University. Do go!
