Public Advocate Mark Green mapped these streets in 1994. Empty lots were infested with rats, blocks from beautiful beaches. They stayed like that for decades-a sinful waste of land. Queens Borough President Donovan Richards had a vision that was transformative and this is the result. Government can work!

The best part? This is just the first phase of the historic Arverne East project. Up next is 1,600 units of housing, retail space, infrastructure upgrades and so much more.

Arverne has been waiting decades for this moment to arise, and it's finally here.

What once was a vacant illegal dumping ground is now a gorgeous 35-acre beachside nature preserve, complete with a multipurpose center. Cutting the ribbon on it yesterday was special beyond words.

I've toured Rikers Island multiple times since becoming BP to see the jail for myself. While I appreciate the progress I saw when I visited this month, the systemic inhumanity there is too great to simply rehabilitate.
