Interesting this convo about what other things dairy farmers could be doing. Most of us tried it during quota with surplus land.
Beef was great for spell when we got subsidies to compensate for a drop in prices which didn't happen straight away. Became sub collection job.

🐄 🌾 A true privilege to host in Parliament 8 fantastic global Agri leader’s from Ireland, New Zealand, Australia & the UK - all undertaking their Nuffield Farming GFP Scholarships.

Great to talk all things food, farming, trade & international geo politics.

Spent 9 days touring Brazil on Nuffield International Farming Scholars GFP. Key take homes - nothing beats being there, farming (in general) is done to a high standard. Deforestation & conservation laws are incredibly strict. Honestly unsure if we’re ahead or behind from a production/sustainability POV

Having my perception of Brazilian beef production challenged by seeing it in person -
- 90% extensive pasture reared, 10% feedlot
- No use of growth promoting hormones/antibiotics
- 70% for domestic production, 30% export
- the hump is served as a delicacy translated as ‘termite’

Before heading from New Zealand with his #GFP group to Brazil, 2023 Nuffield Ireland Scholar David Dolan shared a visit which made a bit impression: Haldon Station in the McKenzie Basin. Managed by Paddy Boyd (in first picture) along with 11 staff.
