The one race that I targeted but never managed to win. Always came up against somebody stronger. Missing the atmosphere on the Muur today. Not missing the overload of lactic on the finish line. La Flèche Wallonne

Of course routes can always be safer. But the pressure on riders to take risks and always be at the front is greater than ever. Speeds are higher and Guys are more willing to take risks and more willing to crash.

I was ostracized when I openly talked about being afraid of crashing.
‘It’s part of cycling’
‘Man up and deal with it. It’s what your paid to do’
‘Should retire if you don’t like it’
The roads haven’t become more dangerous, it’s the mentality that needs to change.

Awesome to see Mount Faron back on the racing calendar in the Var Classic today. Brutal beautiful climb in a great area. Think it was 2009 Tour Med last time I raced up it. Road was grippy chip seal type surface and very narrow with steep gradients especially at the bottom.

Realized that I haven’t watched any cycling on TV since the demise of GCN. It just made being a fan so easy. Discovery+ isn’t available here so feels like we’ve gone back in time having to catch races on Eurosport Live with adverts 🤦‍♂️

Also, realistically, although a lot of money, $250m does not buy a new sport. The Las Vegas F1 cost $500m for 1 race. They invested $2b in LIV golf and so far it’s struggling to take hold.

A new cycling league will hit the same barriers as golf with LIV vs PGA. Money vs Tradition. Sure some will embrace it but Cycling is rooted in history, riders dreaming of the monuments and Grand Tours not a big paycheck.

Struggling to understand how the teams will benefit from bringing big investors in to create a new League. Surely it’s the investors who will want to see the profits. 🤷‍♂️

That last tweet was in jest, but with UCI points so important and a looming relegation battle in 2025, objectives could be set against strength of a start list. Volta Catalunya for example being a lower tiered WT race always seems to have an all star start list. (Except Pog)

Really good of Tadej Pogačar to announce his race schedule so early, just in time for other riders to plan their calendar around avoiding him 🤣

I do think riders need to understand and respect long term contracts are a risk on both sides. If bad luck strikes or expectations not met, the teams cannot just not pay a rider. So if things go well, a rider can’t just leave a team because somebody is willing to pay more!
