Today marks the start of #Kwibuka30 , the 30th commemoration of the genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda. May we always remember the victims, stand in solidarity with the survivors, & renew our commitment to never forget this tragedy and to build a more just, compassionate world.

It is our duty to cry with them, remember with them, open old wounds and grieve outloud collectively as a nation.

I am very greatful to everyone that works tirelessly every year to give us the space to engage in meaninful rememberance of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi.

I wince because for survivors, though they wish, their memories will not fade. The pain is as acute as it was 30 years ago. And I am afraid that one day, having asked them for the ultimate scarifice of forgiveness, that they year on year honour, we dont uphold our end of the deal

But every time a young person says cyunamo is too long or that they wish they could do something fun, I wince. I am afraid one day we take the genocide as a mere fact of event and dont recognize the labour of effort it took to stop and hold Rwanda together through unity.

Hope that the premitative politics it was caused by might fade as well. That our nation's identity might be defined by something other than something so heinous and tragic.
