9.3 TRILLION insects found migrating at night above agricultural China!

Some of these insects are pests, but many play vital positive ecological roles e.g. pollination, decomposition, & nutrient transfer which could be vital to soil health in the region!

Snail shells from our expedition in Borneo.

Or are they?

What look like snail shells are actually caddisfly cases, carefully pieced together from grains of sand.

Join our next expedition to Borneo & you'll be surrounded by mysteries of natural history like these all the time!

This is really interesting, if true; multiple origins of a 'species' via parallel speciation from the same paraphyletic ancestor! eurekalert.org/news-releases/… and original article - academic.oup.com/evolut/advance…

Alitta virens polychaetes flying around. This is their breeding behaviour: for a couple of days a year they float en masse from the bottom to the surface to spawn and release their sexual products into the water. The fertilisation is external, so this is how system works.

Woo-hoo! Hot off the presses, 9 new cryptic species of Dasycerus from the southern Appalachians! And they all look exactly like this one (except, of course, in their male genitalia). This rove beetle looks about as unstaphylinid-like as one could imagine.

In all the decades of caterpillar rearing, I have never seen a case of parasitoidism as extreme as this. Anyone knows what it is? On tomato today, Gainesville, FL (host - probably once was a cabbage looper). RT if you don't but want to find out.

My grandfather built motors that powered big machines. In a lab not so different from his workshop, my colleagues and I uncovered the assembly of the bacterial motor. Today, this discovery has been published in Nature Microbiology nature.com/articles/s4156…

A list of occupations of prisoners sent to Botany Bay in 1787. What happened to all our window peepers, dealers in duds, vapouring scabs and gang the gate swingers? We used to be a proper country.

Working on a new book at the moment with Laurence King and we're looking for an illustrator. It's on insects and the illustrations need to be beautiful and colourful, but faithful and detailed. Let me see your work.

I was just thinking someone needs to write a paper saying it is not biodiversity per se, but *species interactions*, that underpin ecosystem services

This new paper makes that point, although I think there is much more to say on the subject
