Steve Constantino A reality and a dilemma for schools, families & children's learning ,not just for the families that 'go silent' but the ones who 'arrive silent' & think that it is not their place or role to have a say in their children's learning & school.Our challenge how do we elevate voices?

Great conversations here in Kings County (CA) about disengagement and steps to engage and re-engage every family!

Families that go silent do not often like the option, but are often lost for what else to do. The more we understand, and are sympathetic to silence and disengagement, the closer we are to re-establishing healthy relations. Chastising those who become silent gets us nowhere. #eef

As one parent put it: “when you feel you are talking underwater and no one listens, it causes an overwhelming feeling to simply give up trying” The silence of disengagement can be reversed with empathy and an authentic desire to listen and hear. #engageeveryfamily

Understanding silence in disengagement is to know it often is a self-defense against real or perceived threat. Authentic communication and relationship-building, and demonstrating value in others is the best way to counteract isolation brought about by silence. #engageeveryfamily

The silence of disengagement is most often a result of one of the parties, in this case families, feeling undervalued and unappreciated for what they bring to the table. Every family has value, knowledge and skill. #engageeveyfamily

A lack of perceived value in one’s actions or contributions provides a slippery slope to silence and disengagement. Everyone has value.
