Not exactly a throwback Thursday but... just within the bounds of Kenwood is an easily missed clue to the past. This slight undulation by Westfield Gate is actually the remnant of a Saxon ditch dating from the late 1st millennium.

During the Reformation in the 16th century, Kenwood was taken into Royal possession and became part of Henry VIII’s royal hunting grounds stretching north from Westminster. During this period, Kenwood was a woodland estate commercially managed for its timber.

With Wimbledon in full swing, here’s a picture of former Kenwood resident Grand Duke Michael Michaelovitch enjoying a spot of tennis in what is now the Kitchen Garden. Michaelovitch was exiled from Russia and would live at Kenwood until 1917.

Nestled on the Kenwood estate is Spahgnum bog; a rare habitat for three types of Sphagnum moss. While not as pretty as the treasures in the main house, Sphagnum has unique antiseptic qualities, leading to its use as an alternative to cotton bandages during the First World War.
