The sweetest thing, I thought
At one time, between earth and heaven
Was the first smile.

3 May 1915 Edward Thomas writes to Robert Frost after the death of Rupert Brooke ‘All the papers are full of his “beauty” and an eloquent last sonnet beginning “If I should die”. He was eloquent. Men never spoke ill of him.’

The cherry trees bend over and are shedding
On the old road where all that passed are dead,
Their petals, strewing the grass as for a wedding
This early May morn when there is none to wed.

‘If I Should Ever by Chance’ Edward Thomas (1878-1917)

The rent I shall ask of her will be only
Each year's first violets, white and lonely,
The first primroses and orchises—
She must find them before I do, that is.

20 April 1917 Richard Aldington writes to F.S. Flint ‘I see poor Edward Thomas is dead in the last shove–he must have caught a long-digger, as he was in the R.G.A., who, as a rule, are miles back of the line. I’m sorry for him, he was a pleasing and melancholy individual'

Edward Thomas was killed OTD 1917. Although regarded by many as a poet, he only started writing poetry at the age of 36.  By that time, he had already been a prolific critic, biographer, nature writer & travel writer. Thomas had enlisted in the Artists Rifles on 19th July 1915.

The poet Edward Thomas was killed by a shell on this day in 1917 near Arras at a dangerous forward observation post. This recently discovered photo of him and his delightful wife Helen was taken a few months before. Her books about him, As It Was & World Without End, are superb.

At around 0730 on 9th April 1917, Edward Thomas was killed.

The remaining blank pages of his diary are creased by the pressure-wave from a German shell.
