*Private Thomas Hughes dropped a message in a bottle overboard from his ship travelling from England to France. Found in 1999 by an Essex fisherman, it was delivered to his daughter Emily in New Zealand.

this was a note from her Dad to her Mam
sent two weeks before he died.
85 years late, missing a name,
the bottle arrived all the same.

Ta ta, sweet, from your hubbyit read,
and the date was nineteen fourteen
on the note that arrived with no name.
That long ago date seemed a riddle,
then the meaning began to come clear
this definitely was not a game -

Unfolding each salt scented message,
Em hoped they were written to her
though the parcel arrived with no name.
But no, the first asked her to kindly
forward the second - a note to a wife.
The handwriting, both the same.

Here's my Message In a Bottle poem !
“Sir or Madam, Youth or Maid..”
A parcel arrived, with no name,
a bottle with two yellowed pages inside.
Was this some sort of a game?
