Superb piece from Amin Samman on the intersection of money, technology as desire, as laid out in his new edited volume Clickbait Capitalism!

Rieks op den Akker Elgar Publishing I am pleased to say that we include a chapter on the ethics of LAWS (Lethal Autonomous Weapon Systems) from the one researcher who is (in my opinion) best qualified to address it....Elke Schwarz

This is exactly it. These names. The implications of the naming. It says so much about all that which remains unspoken in this conflict

As I said in 2018: [AI systems] produce a sense of urgency whereby action points need to be taken in good faith [...]. This condition may have effects on how the categories ‘necessity’ & ‘imminence’ are interpreted for the justification of lethal force blogs.icrc.org/law-and-policy…

Second, I was reminded of Death Machines by Elke Schwarz. In a prescient manner, she tackles the ethical dilemmas around (newer) technology and war. The recent allegations of use of AI by Israel in Gaza make this book as relevant as ever amzn.eu/d/hUae0uO

An apparent policy of 'kill anything that moves' (as Nick Turse has put it so poignantly in a context that we now refer to as a 'massacre') haaretz.com/israel-news/20…

This really is a prime example of irresponsible 'innovation'. The safeguards (such as politicans' voices as no-go voices) are indicative of ignorance. Every single voice that is modified without consent should absolutely be a no-go voice. Impossible to police.

Tell me, OpenAI, in all sincerity that you think the benefits listed here outweigh the many grave and potentially far reaching risks this technology would yield if rolled out widely without effective constraints.
