Current lab resident Dr. Sean Wesley Noona giving an outstanding presentation on a propensity score matched analysis of prophylactic LAAL in CABG patients without afib! Need to weigh short term risk of POAF with potential long term benefit. Matthew Weber, MD Anthony Norman
UVA Surgery Assoc4AcademicSurgery Was on the interview panel Assoc4AcademicSurgery BTR fellowship - it is so clear that this young man is so passionate about his project, has such a fervor for science, speaks so eloquently abt the big picture goal, & has excellent mentorship from Allan Tsung. Look fwd to great things!
Congratulations to Resident Mohamad El Moheb, MD for receiving a highly competitive Research Trainee Fellowship Award from the Association for Academic Surgery Assoc4AcademicSurgery! His research will focus on preoperative exercise therapy as it affects colorectal cancer metastasis.
Thrilled to be on this exciting research journey! Huge thanks to Allan Tsung for the incredible mentorship. Here's to stepping up the pace in both the lab and the running tracks🏃♂️

👇Our latest study in Journal of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery . Take home message:
1. AI outperforms surgeons in predicting postoperative M&M
2. When surgeons interact with AI, their individual risk predictions improve

Haytham Kaafarani Ander Dorken Gallastegi Steven D Wexner MD, PhD SURGERY Journal Outstanding work! Ander Dorken Gallastegi is a superstar. We are so lucky to have home as part of the Pitt Surgery family. Also exemplifies why inclusivity of people that are IMGs add to the diversity and strength of our training programs and Departments!
Fun evening at #SAAS2023 !Grateful for the opportunity to connect with fellow surgical residents and esteemed faculty. Great job on representing UVA Surgery 🍽️ SocAsianAcadSurg UVA School of Medicine
“Instead of accidentally encoding bias, interpretable AI methodologies are powerful tools to diagnose and remedy system-related bias in care.”
Fascinating work by Haytham Kaafarani Anthony Gebran Mohamad El Moheb @LMaurerMD using ML to detect & counteract bias in care jamanetwork.com/journals/jamas…
Bias in AI is a well-recognized problem. In this study JAMA Surgery, AI instead diagnosed & treated bias in care. Not only did this 'fairness-flipping' remove disparities in access to rehab post-injury, but it also improved the model's performance.
Equitable care is better care.

“We may have reached a tipping point where prediction tools can now [add value to clinical judgment] by bringing data from millions of patients into the hands of 1 surgeon”
