Why can we afford billions for submarines but apparently can't afford to tackle climate change?

Governments don't want to get asked simple questions like that - Richard Denniss explains why they'd rather you think budgets are boring.

AUKUS allows our ‘imperial masters’ to dump their nuke waste here. This on top of paying for subs that might never arrive and in an agreement that threatens to drag us into another American war.

What Mike says here is not true. But it’s also irrelevant since AUKUS pillar 2 is not being offered to NZ. And yet even if it were, and even if it meant getting “advanced tech,” what good is that if it cuts you off from your leading trading partner or culminates in rivalry—>war?

Australian collects more money from young people repaying HECS than from the Petroleum Resource Rent tax (PRRT). Today’s announcement is obviously better than nothing, but it wont reduce the HECS repayments of those struggling with high rents and low wages

Today is . With Julian Assange being murdered slowly in his cell in the UK's Belmarsh high security hell. Impossible to celebrate press freedom unless he is released. Today would be a good day.

If governments were driving climate policy we could trust, there would be *no need* for consumers to seek out particular products or brands.

If Climate Active isnt dead before the election, we'll know Labor has no integrity DCCEEW Chris Bowen

“Foreign policy should not be conducted only via opinion columns and occasional speeches. That isn’t full public debate. And foreign policy needs proper democratic oversight.”

Max Harris identifies a disconnect many feel between foreign policymakers and the public they serve.

As government and industry keep trying to justify increased fossil fuel production in the name of 'national security', *actual* security experts have been telling us climate change is our biggest security risk for years.

Had a great chat yesterday with Triple J’s Hack - genuinely one of the best news and analysis programs on the ABC. On Trump’s trials, and the appalling spectacle of a militarized police crackdown on young people happening under Biden’s watch.
