Today Alex Piquero and I lay out why we must follow facts & best practice, not anecdote. This law will not improve public safety. It will worsen MD's shameful racial disparities and harm Black children. We can and must do better, and it's not too late.

I am lucky Dr. Cait Cavanagh & others are so generous w/ their time. My UMBC students have heard how psychologists are applying their knowledge to policymaking and it has been inspiring! We learned so much from Cait about running for local office & serving her community— thank you!

This leap day is extra special bc it’s release day for my first co-edited book!

Psychology affects the legal decisions of victims, police, prosecutors, judges/juries, experts, etc. To understand law, we must understand psychology.

🗞️In today's The Baltimore Banner:

Dr. Johanna Hellgren, Erika Fountain, and I explain that when police interrogate children, parents do not provide the same protection as lawyers -- and so we urge Maryland not to undo vital legal protections for children 🦀🧒🏾🛟

My American Psychological Association/APLS41 Council term ended in 2023 but I’m attending this week to hopefully see my last two resolutions passed to:
- Oppose involuntary isolation of youth in carceral settings
- Better support parents with disabilities (w/ great work from Kara Ayers & Dr. Erin Andrews)

It turns out that the major pharmacies in the U.S. routinely provide patient medical records to law enforcement without a warrant. The potential ramifications of this for anyone on birth control, medication for mental illness or other personal conditions are staggering.

Let's be clear about what this means. If you live in a state where abortion is illegal, or gender-affirming care is illegal, Rite Aid, Kroger & CVS Pharmacy will hand over your medical records to any law enforcement that asks--without a warrant, without checking with a lawyer.

Been getting a lot of requests to update this thread. So...

Since we published our first story on the juvenile justice system in Rutherford County, TN:

One state lawmaker said she was “horrified.” Another called it a “nightmare.” A third labeled it “unchecked barbarism.”

Shared paper & oped w colleague in another jurisdiction, who lifted up to elected, who will be asking their crime commission to look into this issue there.

This is how research ramifies. 🗣️🗣️🗣️

Are non-defendant FTAs an issue in your jurisdiction?

Kind of. Not all kids who are missing school become system involved, & not all system involved kids are missing school. Truancy is the smoke not the fire. It’s a manifestation of deeper issues with how we fail to support our kids. Those deeper issues are what we need to address.

The American people deserve to know if the government is buying up their location data and private information. I’ve placed a hold on the next NSA Director until there is full transparency.
