At #EGU24 in Vienna next week?
Adele Westgård is presenting on Tuesday (meetingorganizer.copernicus.org/EGU24/EGU24-19…) and
Freya Sykes is presenting on Thursday (meetingorganizer.copernicus.org/EGU24/EGU24-17…).
We look forward to seeing you there!
Have you heard of the climate stripes?
Well, it's time to meet the new kid on the block: ETH Zurich's ocean acidification stripes!
The pH stripes give a visual impression of the change (pink and purples on the right being more acidic) of the global ocean between 1982 and 2022.…
Fantastic evening last night at the Arctic Frontiers Pecha Kucha event with many brilliant talks! 🤩 Thank you to the organisers and all the presenters for a super interesting and fun evening! 🎉🤩Naima El bani Altuna, Freya Sykes Dr Sarah Tingey Dr Jenny Turton iC3 Centre for ice, Cryosphere, Carbon and Climate UiT Norges arktiske universitet

Spent the last few day onboard #RVHelmerHanssen with the masters students. We took sediments from gravity and box cores around Finnmark, & of course it wouldn't have been complete without some plankton nets to hunt for #foraminifera ! We were excited to spot a few N. pachyderma!
👋Finally the third Young Marine Researcher winning project of #ICYMARE2023 on growth & mortality of marine #foraminifera by Freya Sykes using #FireSting -PRO with #pHsensing miniprobes.

A giant thank you to the crew of Marine Institute Research Vessels, my team University of Galway Geography, and collaborators Dr. Allison Jacobel Freya Sykes Adele Westgård Brian Ward, AirSeaLab@University of Galway Nil Irvalı Simon Le Fevre et al. and funders Marine Institute, Geological Survey IE, Science Foundation Ireland, who made this survey possible ❤️
Congrats to Griselda Anglada Ortiz and co for our new paper on the “Seasonality of marine calcifiers in the northern Barents Sea”! Check it out 😊 sciencedirect.com/science/articl…
Freya Sykes and Adele Westgård just got back from a month at sea onboa #RVCelticExplorer Marine Institute Research Vessels and the SiTrAc cruise led by Audrey Morley in the N. Atlantic & Greenland Sea. They've been culturing the planktic #foraminifera G. bulloides and supporting others in their sampling.
Drone images of the #RVCelticExplorer at the entrance of #Sermilikfjord , #Greenland . Thanks to Drone Pilot Paul Stapleton for capturing. #arctic #climateresearch #SiTrAc survey.
New article in Journal Plankton Res describing observations of growth, response to variable water conditions, and dormancy in the planktonic #foraminfera N. pachyderma in culture, check it out! With Mohamed Ezat, Tom Chalk, Melissa Chierici, Gavin Foster and Julie Meilland

View from the #RVCelticExplorer bridge transiting through the Greenland Sea. The SiTrAc survey led by Audrey Morley are working to understand the effects of Climate Change in Polar Seas by studying climate-relevant gases, deepwater dynamics, sediments & plankton life!
Some varying views onboard Celtic Explorer
Marine Institute Research Vessels as we transited down through the Greenland Sea! We're happy to feel the sun on our faces again before heading back west to the ice...
🌊🔬Work is well underway on board #RVCelticExplorer for a fascinating Arctic survey where scientists are working to understand the effects of Climate Change in Polar Seas by studying climate-relevant gases, deepwater dynamics, sediments & plankton life! #ClimateResearch 🧊🔍
Colleges from ARCLIM - The Arctic Ocean Under Warm Climates on Fieldwork to collect G. Bulloides for geochemistry and biological experiments to better understand how sea water properties can impact the shells they grow - thus improving our ability to use fossil shells for climate reconstructions
Excited to promote the excellent work of our partners, The Saami Council, who has co-led and released a 'Roadmap to decolonial Arctic Research”, a toolkit to support EU policymakers and make Arctic research fairer and more respectful to Indigenous communities: phaidra.univie.ac.at/detail/o:16536…
