Alcohol wasn't mentioned once - not even once.

As PM Anthony Albanese addressed the country on the steps National Cabinet agreed to take to combat gender-based violence, alcohol's role in fuelling violence against women and children was again ignored.

The silence was deafening.

I hope the work flagged to be done with states and territories will include a commitment to better tackle prevention by listening to experts like Jess Hill & Michael Salter & looking at the links between harm & alcohol abuse & gambling.

After this morning’s National Cabinet meeting, it’s clear to see there's a deafening silence on alcohol’s role in fuelling violence against women and children.

Meetings don't save lives. National conversations don't save lives. Structural prevention does. fare.org.au/alcohols-role-…

We signed the open letter to the Prime Minister, Premiers and Chief Ministers, because we can no longer ignore the role that alcohol plays in increasing the risk and severity of violence against women and children FARE

Alcohol’s role in fuelling violence has been ignored.

Between 23 & 65% of police reported family violence incidents involve alcohol.

We will continue to call on govts to listen to the voices of women & children who have experienced violence exacerbated by alcohol.

Governments can change laws.

Governments can introduce policy.

Governments can hold alcohol companies accountable.

The commercial determinants of gender based and family violence - alcohol and gambling - have been ignored.

I’m incredibly disappointed that alcohol was not mentioned at the meeting & that structural prevention did not appear to be a focus of the meeting at all today.

Meetings do not save lives.

National conversations do not save lives.

Actions do.
