Laboratoire FAST
@FAST_Orsay
The FAST laboratory is a joint research unit of @CNRS and @UnivParisSaclay.
We study the dynamics of #fluids and #solids from every angle.

The next Laboratoire FAST/LISN seminar, entitled “The Countoscope: Measuring Dynamics by Counting Particles in Boxes” will be given by Sophie Marbach from PHENIX lab on Thursday 28 March 2024 at 2pm (seminar room C.120, Bât. 530). More info: semmeca.lisn.upsaclay.fr/affiche/res24_…
Our last study, led by Ram Sharma and in collaboration with Laboratoire FAST, is online arxiv.org/pdf/2402.07285… . We ask ourselves if we can find a common macroscopic description of cohesive granular media having different sources of inter-particle cohesion? UC Santa Barbara's College of Engineering
Building a theory for small-scale oceanic turbulence is a key point for improving small-scale parameterization in climate models. We present in Physical Review Letters a theoretical work on internal wave turbulence leading to solutions in line with oceanic spectra. journals.aps.org/prl/abstract/1…
The next Laboratoire FAST / LISN seminar, entitled 'Morphogenesis in the cutting of soft polymers', will be given by Matteo Ciccotti from SIMM Laboratory ESPCI Paris - PSL on Thursday 11 January 2024 at 2pm (seminar room C.120, Bât. 530). More info: semmeca.lisn.upsaclay.fr/affiche/res24_…
Cette semaine, nous avons eu le plaisir de faire découvrir les manips et les services du labo à 9 collégien.nes de 3ème lors d'un stage mutualisé avec Laboratoire de Physique des Solides et Laboratoire FAST
Did you know that the rate of evaporation of a complex system (eg, polymer in water) does not necessarily depend on the ambient humidity? Find out more about the model from Laboratoire FAST &

The next Laboratoire FAST / LISN seminar, entitled 'Soft nanofluidics', will be given by Anne-Laure Biance from iLM, Recherche on Thursday, November 30 at 2pm (seminar room C.120, Bât. 530). More info: semmeca.lisn.upsaclay.fr/affiche/res23_…
We observed these thermal antibubbles for quite a long time before understanding the role of thermalization in their dynamics. You can find our results in this recent Physical Review Letters article in collaboration with Université libre de Bruxelles and Université de Liège : journals.aps.org/prl/abstract/1…
Why does the wind create waves on the sea? We address this question, central to fluid mechanics, from a unique perspective: the wind, in our experiments, blows over a sea of oil! Check out our findings in Physical Review Fluids

How does viscoelasticity affect mucus transport in the lungs? In our recent Journal of Fluid Mechanics article with colleagues from Institut Langevin and LISN, we found via hydrodynamic simulations that mucociliary clearance can be greatly hampered in diseased mucus. doi.org/10.1017/jfm.20…

In a recent Journal of Fluid Mechanics article with UnivSavoieMontBlanc, we uncover a new short-wave instability mode in falling liquid films sheared by a turbulent gas flow. This mode causes upward travelling ripples and eventually merges with the well-known Kapitza mode. bit.ly/3ETg9RU
A 2-year postdoctoral position is open at Laboratoire FAST on the dispersion and organisation of flexible fibres into a granular medium. Candidates with a PhD in soft matter physics, fluid or solid mechanics are invited to apply. More details here: fast.u-psud.fr/fichiers/Proje…
How does motion propagate in a dense assembly of particles confined at a liquid-air interface? In Physical Review E, we investigate experimentally the microdynamics at the origin of the heterogeneous flow in such a granular raft.

What are the characteristics of the annular vortices generated by the unsteady motion of a disk from start to stop? These are now reported in our Physical Review Fluids article in collaboration with ∂'Alembert - SU & CNRS and UC Santa Barbara's College of Engineering
