Let’s not forget that doing simple analyses (e.g., calculating a mean difference) is usually fine and often is the most straight-forward way of answering your research question. Prioritize quality data over fancy models.

I recently shared an experience I had with a journal and was encouraged to share the decision letter more broadly. For the youngens who still get frustrated, this same paper was rejected by the QJE (a more appropriate 'home' given the style.) It's always a lottery!

One of my main motivations for founding Our World in Data was to overcome the mad reality in academia that much of the most important research and data is locked away behind paywalls.

I wanted research and data to be a public good, accessible to *everyone*.

A few reminders.

1.) just because I post a study doesn’t mean I think it’s flawless.

2.) I’m not going to read the article for you.

3.) think you can do better at sharing research? Be my guest. But please do get off the sidelines and grace us with your presence.

A good reminder that the recent breakthroughs in AI were pretty unexpected: we went from a list of “nowhere near solved” problems to 85% of those problems being solved in a couple years.

Also a reminder that we don’t actually know how future capabilities will evolve, either.

Why do we dislike inflation?

🚨New paper for The Brookings Institution revisits this long-standing question, already asked by Robert J Shiller in 1997, with current data and survey methods. Some key findings:🧵 1/10

The only question reviewers should be asking themselves:
'Is the community better off with this paper, or without it?'
inappropriate reasons for rejection include: not beating SOTA, bad writing, minor flaws, no theory yet good results, incomplete citations (easily fixed),.....

Tomorrow's the 14th anniversary of the enactment of the Affordable Care Act.

If you want to know how the public thought about the ACA during its first decade, I've got you covered--check out my Russell Sage Foundation book 'Stable Condition.'

In the electronic publishing era, I just do not see any reasonable justification for these kinds of rejection rates. We know these journals are not a great proxy for quality. Let’s 5x the number of articles accepted and let the impact of the articles speak for themselves

All journals should have format free submission. I’m not tryna front anybody off, but I just spent 4 iterations of “return to sender” over three weeks reformatting tables and references to fit obscure fine print. Then once I finally get it right, being desk rejected in 30 minutes

The hallmark of an open mind is refusing to let your ideas become your identity.

If you define yourself by your opinions, questioning them is a threat to your integrity.

If you see yourself as a curious person or a lifelong learner, changing your mind is a moment of growth.

People sometimes argue for the benefits of toxic cultures ('E*MR provides valuable info,' 'hostile seminar culture incentivizes better work,' etc). But they underestimate the costs. Not just the costs on people's health, but on science.

Smart + nice is possible. And optimal.
