At today's Energy and Commerce Committee Innovation, Data, and Commerce Subcommittee hearing, Consumer Tech Association CEO Gary Shapiro questioned how many AM stations are regularly manned. During a train derailment in Minot, ND, police were unable to reach the local AM radio station!

Did you know? AM & FM are the only radio that don't pay performers for their work. (Digital and streaming platforms pay performance royalties.) An mandate would condone this unfair system, allowing the broadcast industry to profit @ the expense of artists.

Is in ALL cars needed for emergency alerts? Per @FEMA, “the public is moving away from radio.” A Consumer Tech Association study post-a 2023 emergency alert system test found that 95% of Americans received the alert on their phone. Just 1% heard it via AM radio.

U.S. automakers must compete for market share globally, and an mandate would add weight and cost to electric cars – putting American automakers at a disadvantage. Energy and Commerce Committee should reject mandates and keep American business competitive.

Where consumers want AM radio, automakers will respond to that preference: that’s the market at work! Ultimately, that’s what we should all be advocating for: a free-market economy where Americans can decide what they want – not a heavy-handed mandate.

An mandate is especially inappropriate in service of an industry that has refused to invest in improvements to AM radio technology that would improve sound quality and reduce audible distortion – and instead sought government mandates to stay afloat.

On principle, Consumer Tech Association does not ask the government to fund our industry or mandate our products. We believe that marketplace competition, not dictates from the federal government, should determine which technologies thrive and grow. Energy and Commerce Committee

Congress shouldn’t mandate century-old technology in 21st century cars, simply to throw a lifeline to the declining AM radio industry. Check out my written testimony to Energy and Commerce Committee opposing an mandate. energycommerce.house.gov/events/innovat…

I’m honored to testify to Energy and Commerce Committee on the unneeded and unprecedented AM radio mandate. We believe American consumers, not radio broadcasters, should decide what entertainment technologies belong in their cars. Watch here: youtube.com/watch?v=0dxUl6…

Sound familiar? ➡️ “They argue that requiring an FM chip in cell phones is necessary to preserve free, over-the-air radio. They also argue that the mandate is justified because over-the-air radio provides critical information in times of emergencies.”

As we go into this week’s hearing on mandating AM radio in cars, a little déjà vu ➡️ Remember when they wanted to mandate FM chips in phones? Same arguments. Didn’t happen then. Shouldn’t happen now. project-disco.org/competition/fu…

Powerful Computer & Communications Industry Association survey proves the relentless assault on American tech leaders by the FTC and EU would devastate the average state and local government employee pension plan member, costing them over $3,015. That doesn't help our workers or economy - why are we doing this?
