What a fantastic #scicomm course from The Genetics Society and First Create The Media covering everything from stand up comedy to science demos and video production. Lots of chances to try new things in a really friendly environment
Today at #CYSWorkshop2024 was all about visual media content! It was so fun to learn tips and tricks in the morning and use them in the afternoon 😇 The Genetics Society
I had a great time at the Communicate Your Science workshop #CYS24 with The Genetics Society
In only 2.5 days we did: presentations, standup comedy, a science fair, tiktok videos and learned more about inclusion in sciences communication.
Inspired by the amazing trainers and participants!
What an incredible workshop hosted by The Genetics Society and Jonathan Pettitt with First Create The Media. So privileged to have been accepted for a place on this course among so many talented, passionate and supportive individuals. Huge thank you to everyone involved. 🧬
Some very sketchy proof that I have dipped my toe into the water of stand-up. Interesting photo as you can see how my body language is much more casual than it would be when normally presenting. The Genetics Society #CommYourSci
Annnnd final challenge: making a social media video. As a complete alien to TikTok, and only 45mins to complete, it wasn’t too bad! Here’s a still. Decided to try “30 seconds of science”. A few tweaks and maybe I’ll upload it for you guys to see. Maybe. The Genetics Society #CommYourSci

After comedy filled morning, our afternoon was filled with activity based science communication where we actually had our mini Science Fair at #CYSWorkshop2024 by The Genetics Society
2nd day of #CYSWorkshop by The Genetics Society started with a comedy training, where I actually performed my first stand-up act!
Also did a cute prototype science fair with the #CommYourSci cohort. My stand focussed on improving young people’s understanding of where food comes from, through matching lunch items (from our buffet) with foraged plants (from the manor grounds!). The Genetics Society
What. A. Day. Have never had a bigger public speaking challenge than today’s stand-up comedy set about my science. Yes, really. Extremely uncomfortable, but feel I’ve made a HUGE step in approaching public speaking from a more authentic place. The Genetics Society #CommYourSci
It’s been such a brilliant first day at The Genetics Society #CommYourSci workshop! Inspiring lectures about story telling from Jonathan Pettitt, Alison Wollard and Kat Arney. Have been hooked on the talks from the first minute - incredible public speakers and tutors.
