For what I believe is the first time since its release in 1951, I'm making available the other side of Zohra El Fassia's classic 'Moulay Brahim,' a recording I find no less enthralling: Aïta Akki Atta. Take a listen here. soundcloud.com/gharamophone/z…

Twelve years ago, I posted my first Zohra El Fassia recording to Soundcloud. It was her iconic and pathbreaking 1951 rendition of 'Moulay Brahim'––and it has since travelled far and wide. soundcloud.com/gharamophone/z…

🔥🔥🔥 from Zohra El Fassia. Since uploading this 1940 recording yesterday, it has already been listened to 200+ times. I hope it reaches more ears soon. soundcloud.com/gharamophone/z…

Hard to believe that Recording History was published a year ago today w/Stanford Press. Since then, I have been blessed to tour with it across N. America & discuss it virtually from Casa to Doha. With its upcoming Arabic translation, I look forward to continuing the conversation.

'The book represents a landmark in the study of the musical cultures of North Africa [...] thereby setting a high bar for future scholarship on the region and its cultural dynamics.' Floored by Jonathan Shannon's generous review in The Journal of North African Studies.

ICYMI, I have been updating @gharamophone with more and more music of late. This interpretation of an 18th century Hebrew language piyyut was added earlier this week. gharamophone.com/2023/05/09/abr…

'Much as the artist Aroun Haouzi El Baidi sings of sleepless nights and a fire blazing in his liver, the hope is that listeners here are awakened to a similar sensation when it comes to a musician who deserves much more by way of recognition.' gharamophone.com/2023/05/17/aro…

'On this mid-twentieth century recording, then, furnished by Abraham Arzouane in Casablanca, is an echo not only of a particular person and place but of multiple meaningful moments in time which stretch back to the end of the 18th century.' gharamophone.com/2023/05/09/abr…
