And here is the 1840 2nd edition. Greenough improved both geology and colours without losing his original naturalistic aims: 'The original colouring of a geolog. map demands a great deal of reflection and discrimination – so much so at least as the colouring of a picture.'

Here is the original 1820 1st edition map; notice significant colour differences from the 3rd ed.(1865) revised by committee. The original is purposely naturalistic (e.g. chalk is off-white, not green). And for an accurate bio. of Greenough and maps see shorturl.at/wHMR9

Excited to see my latest study has been published.

Led by Judy Massare, our study focuses on a treasure trove of Early Jurassic ichthyosaurs amassed over 150 years ago by prolific collector Charles Moore. Some of these were found by Mary Anning, including this giant skull. 1/2

Yorkshire does this big and best thing! A similar find at Wadsley in 1873 when workmen found a fossil forest digging to build an asylum. The fossils were saved by Henry Clifton Sorby + he used the stump asymmetry to suggest palaeowind direction from W in Carb. times - a first!

While reshelving this 1838 edition of 'Essay on the Geology of the Lothians' by RJH Cunningham, we found this charming little watercolour of the Bass Rock surrounded with gannets.

We stumbled across this great footage from The Associated Press News archive recently. It features our 'Dinosaurs' on the move as well as aerial views of the Crystal Palace, footage of it on fire & the aftermath as it's demolished. Any ideas why the Dinos were being moved? buff.ly/4dbclev
