And here is the 1840 2nd edition. Greenough improved both geology and colours without losing his original naturalistic aims: 'The original colouring of a geolog. map demands a great deal of reflection and discrimination – so much so at least as the colouring of a picture.'

Yorkshire does this big and best thing! A similar find at Wadsley in 1873 when workmen found a fossil forest digging to build an asylum. The fossils were saved by Henry Clifton Sorby + he used the stump asymmetry to suggest palaeowind direction from W in Carb. times - a first!

John Phillips was a giant of 19thC geology. He was a scientific Dick Whittington, from orphaned apprentice to Oxford Professor, with no university education inbetween.
