First discovered by in 1811, the statues are some of the largest in Crystal Palace Park. Although Anning didn’t live to see them, they are testament to her work.

This huge (1/3 tonne) was found by aged just 14! Its been Bristol Museum & Art Gallery since 1845 and I recently had the pleasure of cleaning, conserving & mounting it for the new exhibition that opens there next week.

Anatomist Everard Home was born in Hull in 1756. His 1814–20 papers on the fossil 'crocodile' found by Joseph & were considered 'abstruse, incomprehensible' & Home ‘vain, overbearing'. He named it 'Proteosaurus' and resented that others preferred 'Ichthyosaurus'.

The sign has been updated! Buuut it's still associated with the wrong , the giant Rhomaleosaurus. Anning's actual original plesiosaur (Plesiosaurus dolichodeirus) is located a short distance away in the gallery.
