We were riffing on this in subgroup yesterday... 17 years later, someone discovers you still hunting in a sub-sub-basement, riffling through a dusty volume that hasn't seen sunlight since the 1700s. The Holy Grail is also down there, but it doesn't matter, only the reference.

Being a good researcher does not make you a good leader, but you can use your research skills to grow your leadership skills.

Just as with research, leadership involves learning new information, seeking feedback, and testing and evaluating new approaches.

If you’re attempting a new experiment or technique in lab, it’s okay to treat the first try (or first several tries) as a practice run.

Just like a dancer learning a new routine, you need to learn a set of coordinated new moves, and that takes time and practice to master.

Dear PhD students: use your time to read and learn. The PhD is the time to do so. At later stages, you will have much less time to do it, and you will miss it. So, if you decide to go for a PhD, select the topic that you like, and read and learn and enjoy learning.

On the tougher days in this job, I need to remind myself that:

-the self-doubt means I have ambitious career goals
-the failure means I'm taking risks and trying something new
-the frustration means I care and I'm passionate about my work
