61 Oxford Street, once the home of suffragette Lucia Foster Welch, Southampton’s first female councillor. She became the town’s first female mayor in 1927.

In 1928 she welcomed Amelia Earhart to Southampton when she became the first woman to cross the Atlantic in an aeroplane.

in 1908, a blizzard covered Southampton in a thick blanket of snow.

The town was described as ‘fairyland’. Meanwhile, two ships collided in the Solent.

Here’s a blog post about the 25 April 1908 snowstorm, with eleven photos taken on that day: historicsouthampton.co.uk/snow/

One of the long corridors inside the Royal Victoria Hospital, Netley. The huge military hospital opened in 1863 and it was a quarter of a mile in length. The US Army controlled the hospital in WW2 and I’ve heard stories about Americans riding motorbikes up and down the corridors.

There were ‘impressive scenes’ in 1914 as tens of thousands of people attended a ‘solemn service’ during the unveiling of the Titanic Engineers’ Memorial in Southampton.

‘Tears were upon many faces, and in every heart there was sorrow.’

in 1912, five days after the Titanic disaster, a memorial service was held in St Mary’s Church. The church was completely packed. Sailors marched from the docks in order to attend. Southampton was a town in mourning and it came to a complete standstill for the service.

I have just seen a postcard for sale on eBay that was sent from Southampton in 1924 by someone called Emma to a man in Baltimore, USA.

‘We got shore leave at Southampton but are now on way again to New York. It isn’t much of a town here.’

Isn’t much of a town?! I am outraged.

The Palladium cinema on Portswood Road opened in 1913. It closed in 1958 and was then remodelled and transformed into a supermarket, which can be seen in the 1969 Daily Echo photo. The library next door opened in 1915. It’s still a library today and, thankfully, looks the same.

Remains of the anti-aircraft battery in Westwood near Weston Shore.

Remembering 18-year-old Nora Caveney, killed here in 1942 after being hit by shrapnel from a bomb. The first ATS soldier in Anti-Aircraft Command to be killed in action in WW2. Laid to rest at Netley.

Six Dials was the junction where New Road, Andrew’s Road, St Mary’s Road, St Mark’s Road, Northam Road, and St Mary Street all met. In 1938 it became the site of Southampton’s first roundabout. Six Dials looks nothing like this today; it is now a busy multi-lane intersection.

Historic Southampton Thanks to Historic Southampton's fantastic map, at this time of the year we always remember Charles Sangster who resided roughly where me and my lad now sit at St Mary's. I often wonder if Charles liked football.
