The museum will operate under the usual opening hours of 10am – 5pm with a last entry time of 4:30pm.

⚒️ Recently our shipwrights made a repair to the ensign staff. You can see on the image where some wasps got in. A laminate was made in the workshop & attached to the staff by creating a scarph joint.

The laminate is then rounded before the riggers supervise it’s reinstallation.

We are currently hosting a student placement at the Museum.

Priscilla is studying an MA in Museum and Artefact Studies at Durham University and has an interest in maritime history. Her current project is to catalogue the props on HMS Trincomalee, from cannons to replica food!

Eliza Bunt was married to boatswain John Bunt who in 1816 was appointed to the naval dockyard in Trincomalee

When her husband died Eliza travelled the 5 month journey to England on HMS Trincomalee. She kept a diary giving us an insight into life on board

Our Curator Muskaan recently came across a blogpost from 2012 mentioning the existence of a model of HMS Trincomalee at the Nehru Centre in Mumbai, India.

Luckily, her parents happened to visit Mumbai last week and upon arrival they were greeted by this large ship model!

4 March - International Scrapbooking Day

Renamed Foudroyant in 1897, HMS Trincomalee served as a training ship from the 1930s -1987

Trainees were encouraged to keep scrapbooks & several of these are at NMRN Hartlepool

⚓ This half term, visit Diving Deep: HMS Invincible 1744

At 2.30am, 19 February 1758 all was fine on board Invincible. But from the moment Admiral Boscawen gave the signal to raise their anchors and set sail for Nova Scotia, a series of calamities began.

Many objects from the wreck of Invincible have a strong smell. The rope still smells of the tar used to waterproof it in 1758

Under the seabed, it's an anaerobic environment – that means there is no oxygen. It's thanks to this that the objects on Invincible are so well-preserved

This half term, climb aboard the last remaining Royal Navy ship to be built in India, HMS Trincomalee.

Discover the rich history of this extraordinary ship and experience the hierarchy of life at sea from the captain's cabin to the crew’s mess deck.
